The Path from First Practice Session to the CVR Exam

A mastery-gated training path from listening practice to the NVRA Certified Verbatim Reporter exam. The phases below are the program design, not a guaranteed timeline. How long it takes depends on your practice frequency and starting skill. Total investment in subscription, equipment, software, and exam fees: roughly $2,700 (as of August 2026, check current prices) vs $15,000 to $55,000 for traditional steno school tuition.

The training journey

Seven phases, each building on the last. You advance when you prove mastery, not when a semester ends. Equipment costs are staged so you only spend money after you have proven you can do this. Month ranges describe how the program is sequenced, not how long any individual will take. VerbatimPrep is new and has no graduates yet.

Listen + Type

Available now

Listen to dictation and type what you hear. The scoring engine grades every word against the error categories from the NVRA CVR grading guidelines and tells you exactly what to fix. Start at 120 WPM, unlock 140 when you prove mastery.

The speed number is how fast the audio plays, not how fast you type. You listen, then type at your own pace. Nothing here asks you to type at 120 or 180 words per minute. The skill you are building is accurate listening.

Find Your Voice

No mask needed

Start speaking in week 2. Begin with mumble shadowing (sub-vocal repetition), progress to full-voice shadowing at 120 then 140 WPM. The platform scores your voice with speech recognition and tracks your lag behind the speaker.

The Mask

Commitment gate

Buy the stenomask and train with precision speech recognition scoring. Climb from 140 to 180 WPM with punctuation commands layered in one at a time. This is where the real skill forms.

Full Voice Writer

All 3 exam legs

Add speaker labels, tackle Jury Charge at 200 WPM and Q&A at 225 WPM. Practice with serialized case files: original deposition arcs with recurring characters and escalating difficulty. Train past exam speed so the exam feels slow.

Why it works

Mastery gates, not calendars

You advance when you prove you are ready, not when a semester ends. No skipping ahead into speeds that build bad habits. No waiting around when you are already there. The data decides.

Instant scoring on every word

The platform scores your transcript in seconds against the NVRA CVR grading categories. Traditional programs return graded work days or weeks later. Immediate feedback is how skill forms.

🎤

Voice from week 2

Start speaking early with low-pressure mumble shadowing so there is never a cliff between typing and voice writing. The modality switch happens gradually, not all at once after months of typing.

👥

A human guide when it matters

A trained guide checks in at the transitions where people stall: the voice switch, the first plateau, the exam prep. The software handles instruction. The guide handles motivation and technique.
